Sexism Running for Cleveland's Mayor

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

After 16 years in office, the current Mayor of Cleveland, Frank Jackson, has stated that he will not be running for re-election. That came as a big surprise to many Clevelanders. After 16 years, it was widely assumed that Mayor Jackson would be running again.

With Mayor Jackson’s retirement, an interesting election lies ahead for Cleveland and its residents. Many candidates have come forward and announced their candidacies, such as former seat holders like Dennis Kucinich and Senator Sandra Williams. We have seen a lot happening in these past 5 months of candidates announcing and running their campaigns, from petition mistakes to almost signature fraud in the case of Justin Bibb.

Many of these candidates have their own controversies, like Kucinich, for creating a Cleveland logo postcard with images of bullet holes and blood, which many claimed it was designed to spread fear among Clevelanders. “This is a fear-monger shit" an Instagram user shared with us. The person, who asked to not be identified, also said that she thinks the card was just trash.

We also have some current City Council members running for the Mayoral seat, like Kevin Kelley and Basheer Jones, both known for their work in the Cleveland community. Even though these candidates are in a good position right now they both want more. Both candidates have controversies but between the two, the one who has it really bad is Basheer Jones.

Basheer Jones is the first Muslim male running for Mayor of Cleveland. This puts him in a great position to make history, but the history he has made in the city of Cleveland as of today is not good. On June 23rd of 2021, a Facebook user that goes by the name Stacy Long posted a video in which Mr. Jones talks about men’s superiority in the world. “Mayoral Candidate Basheer Jones practicing Male Chauvinism, ‘I don’t care what they say’ Ladies, make sure you make your voices heard on Election Day,” said Ms. Long.

Mr. Jones said in the video mentioned that “Women are not our leaders. I don’t care what they say, we the men are their leaders.” Since the surprising reveal of this video, mayoral candidate Basheer Jones has avoided the topic when it is brought up to him in public forums or news interviews. Regularly, he uses the “crime in Cleveland is way too high” excuse to not answer the question. Our team tried to communicate with the Basheer Jones for Mayor team but did not get a response from them.

The city of Cleveland has too many corrupt, racist, sexist, homo-transphobic, and unjust politicians in office. Now is the time to change that. A man who says that “women are not our leaders” and still believes in men's supremacy should not be holding a public office position. Remember to make a difference this August 17th, September 14th, and if his candidacy makes it to November 2nd, to Vote NO to Basheer Jones.
