Patria Y Vida Libertad for Cuba

Since 1965, Cuba has been suffering from a lack of human freedoms. The rise of Fidel Castro put the island in a corrupt state with a communist dictatorship. However, Communism wasn't always Cuba's main form of government. Before the fall of Batista, Cuba was a Socialist based nation… a nation where the people were put first and had a voice. Now, we know Cuba for the Communist dictatorship that the Castro's brought with their regime.

In 2021, almost two decades after a different major protest, Cubans are once again back in the streets of Cuba fighting for their rights. People are fighting against Communism and the attacks of the current administration towards the communities of Cuba. "No dictatorship, No Communism! Down to this Communist Bitches" was the main chant by many protesters in Cuba.

The Castro administration is not giving up on their communist ideals so easily. It’s known that police and federal officers have been sent out to the streets to attack and kill anyone who refuse to stop protesting. One person is known to be dead and about 120 protesters have disappeared as a right now. "In the town of Batabanó, my nephew was just killed. They tortured him. His teeth were removed one by one and he was beaten with thick wooden sticks and his eyes were also removed" - said a citizen of Cuba to Telemundo News.

Here in the United States, hundreds of thousands of Cubans and Cuban descendants are coming out to the streets to support their family's homes.

Cities like Rochester, NY are filling their streets with flags and banners. People are coming out every day to support Cuba and raise their fists against

Communism. Cuban Rights Organizer and Rochester Citizen,

Leydis Varona shares how the situation that Cuba is facing has affected her and her family. "I had to leave my country to have a better future. We could never share our thoughts about the country because if we did, they would arrest us. In Cuba, there is a lot of poverty, and a large part of my family, at some point, did not have anything to eat, just a simple banana that they grew themselves."

Cuba is in need of resources and we the people, who know freedom, can do many things to support them. Write a letter to your State and U.S. Representatives and Council Members about supporting immigration laws that help Cubans move to the United States and be enable to receive assistance. You can also donate to organizations helping Cuba like https://www.firsthandaid.org/. You can also visit the island and write a personal letter to your local editors. When visiting, bring extra resources like food, first aid kits, protest resources, and other items to support those in need (visit https://locallysourcedcuba.com/gifts-to-bring-to-cuba/ to learn what items you can bring).

American is represented by red, white, and blue, but the same colors represent our sister land Cuba, as well. Now that you know the steps that you can take, you can support the much-needed change that will make a difference for so many people.
