What About the LEAD Cleveland?

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

The tents go up and the people get together... Clevelanders coming together to put a stop to this Lead Poisoning Crisis. They stand together and camp together until the first sign of daylight. Council members and candidates sleep while waiting for the comrades and co-workers.

Lead is a metal used in numerous products because of its strength and low melting point as well as other notable properties. Unfortunately, lead is toxic to the human body systems and in many situations presents health hazards to young children. Although lead exposure can result from many diverse sources, the principal source of concern for Cleveland residents is from lead paint. Lead paint was used as a main component in the production of paint before 1978. Lead dust hazards can be created with the passing years of the paint that has been used.

Ward 7 City Council Candidate, Jeff Mixon, talked to us about the Cleveland lead epidemic, "we had been knowing about the Cleveland lead epidemic for over six years now. Our leaders have not done anything about it, so we're here to do something about it. We are here to protect our children and to make our current officials treat this issue with more urgency. Anyone in a position that can do something about it and have not done it should feel responsible for the children that have suffered lead poisoning. Since our leaders don't feel that sense of urgency to pass these laws, we're here to push them to that sense of urgency."

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set a level of five micrograms per deciliter as a warning to identify children with elevated levels of lead but there is no known level of lead deemed safe for children. Exposure happens when the paint begins to peel, allowing it to be ingested or to be inhaled by adults or children.

Landlords and property owners are not happy with the process to make lead testing a mandate. Landlords are claiming that these new policies will put them in a financial bind and create a possible negative situation with their tenants. Rents will have to go higher, and they may lose their tenants. Current councilman of Ward 17, Charles Slife, said "We all understand the value and intent behind this important work, as Director Donald said, 'this isn't an intent to put extreme financial burdens on property owners and force them to raise their rent to pay for it.' ".

"The lead program is here to keep our children safe," said candidate for Cleveland City Council- Ward 12, Tawayne McGee. McGee joined the team to put pressure on the current administration so they can pass these bills as soon as possible.

Cleveland's lead epidemic will get worse if landlords are not forced to test their homes. Organizations like Lead Safe Cleveland are here to support you through the process of finding out that you or your children have been victims of lead poisoning. Join their organization today via https://leadsafecle.org/ so you can be part of the team that makes history by saving thousands of kids from being poisoned.
